Playtech Welcomes New Chairman Elect: John Gleasure Set to Lead Transformation
Playtech has recently confirmed the appointment of John Gleasure as an independent Non-executive Director and Chairman Elect. The former executive will officially step into the Chairman role following Playtech’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May 2025. At that time, current Chairman Brian Mattingley will transition out of the position. This leadership shift aligns with Playtech’s continued evolution toward a more B2B-centric business model.
John Gleasure’s Extensive Background in Digital Sports Media and Gaming
Gleasure’s vast experience spans over three decades within the realms of digital sports media and gaming. He co-founded Perform Group, an influential entity in sports media, and has held leadership roles at major companies such as Sky Sports, Hutchison 3G, and Sony Pictures. His in-depth industry knowledge positions him well to guide Playtech through its transformation.
Additionally, Gleasure serves as a Non-executive Director at both DAZN Group and The Sporting News. Notably, he previously held the Executive Chairman role at The Sporting News, further cementing his leadership credentials. His expertise is especially relevant to Playtech’s evolving strategy, which increasingly focuses on data-driven broadcasting, rights management, and content delivery—key areas that are central to the company’s direction moving forward.
The addition of Gleasure to Playtech’s leadership team brings valuable experience at a time when the company is pivoting towards a predominantly B2B-focused business model. Current Chairman Brian Mattingley emphasized the importance of Gleasure’s wealth of experience, noting, “John’s significant experience and knowledge will be a tremendous asset for Playtech as it continues its transformation into a predominantly pure-play B2B business.”
Gleasure expressed his enthusiasm about the role, stating, “Playtech is a unique and highly innovative business, underpinned by technology and relationships with the world’s leading gambling operators. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead.”
His outlook aligns with Playtech’s strategic goals, particularly its efforts to bolster partnerships with top-tier operators and solidify its position in the global gaming industry.
Expansion Efforts and Poker Network Deals with PMU and FDJ
In February, Playtech made a significant move to extend its presence in the French poker market through a new agreement with PMU. The collaboration saw PMU join the iPoker.EU network, providing access to Playtech’s cutting-edge gamification tools and its tournament content. This deal mirrors a similar partnership with FDJ, which Playtech secured in 2023, marking another milestone in its ongoing global expansion.
As part of his appointment, Gleasure will receive an annual base fee of £140,000 (approximately $185,720). A revised compensation package will be introduced when he formally assumes the Chairman position after the AGM. Playtech plans to make additional announcements following the AGM in May 2025, which will provide further insights into the company’s leadership transition.
